Babak Castle and Arasbaran Forests
Babak Castle, also known as Immortal Castle and Republic Castle, is located in the northwestern part of Iran, in the mountains of Arasbaran forests in Kalibar city near Tabriz. This fort was built in Sassanid era by Babak Khorramdin, the leader of the Khurramites in Azerbaijan. He built this stronghold in order to protect Iran against Arab invasions and he was successful. The castle stood up for about 20 years against them and after 1200 years, it is still standing there like a soldier on duty and it has become a national symbol for Iranians.
One of the great experiences you will have is that you may be lucky enough to see the Nomad camps. The nomads are very kind and they will welcome you with their fresh dairies. Walking up this castle needs a pair of hiking shoes and plenty of water because you are going to climb for about 3 hours and you have a hard path ahead to get to the 2380 meters high fort. On your way, there are some broken stairs and at some points no protection fences, so you have to be extra careful. But as soon as you see the view of Arasbaran forest and cliffs, you will forget about the difficulties and you will be able to enjoy the stunning view in front of you. The cool weather is pleasing and the cold breeze touches your skin, you feel alive in the wonderful structure of this large citadel.
